What Is an ESOP? Why USA Mortgage Is Proud to Be 100% Employee Owned
No one cares more about a company’s success than its owner. They have the most to gain, and the most to lose. So what if there was a way to build that same sense of ownership into every employee, and give them a real incentive to work hard and stay with the company for the long haul?
At USA Mortgage, that is not a hypothetical. We are 100 percent employee owned, and it shapes everything from how we treat our team to how we treat our clients.
What Is an ESOP?
An Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP, is a benefit structure designed to give employees a real, physical stake in a company’s success by providing stock ownership to everyone on the team, not just executives or founders.
Each employee’s account is credited with a designated number of company stock shares or cash contributions throughout their time with the company. After retirement, death, disability, or another qualifying separation, that account is distributed to the employee or their beneficiaries in shares of stock, cash, or a combination of both. The payout is based on the fair market value of the company stock at the time of separation, in proportion to the shares held in the employee’s account.
Because the payout depends on the value of the stock at the time it is disbursed, employees have a direct, built in motivation to help grow the company’s value over time.
Tax free contributions can be made on behalf of employees, which is part of why an ESOP is designed to reward longer term employees specifically. Most plans include a vesting period before benefits are fully earned. In simple terms, the longer an employee stays with the company, the more vested they become, and the greater the benefit they can eventually realize.
Employee Stock Ownership Plans create a rare win for everyone involved: employers, employees, and customers alike.
ESOP Benefits for Employers
Employee turnover is one of the biggest challenges any business can face. Companies with ESOPs consistently report dramatically lower turnover than the industry average. Retaining top talent reduces recruiting and training costs, and it avoids the lost productivity that comes with constant onboarding.
Employee owners understand exactly how they benefit from those savings, and it shows. They tend to be more proactive about doing what is best for the company, from the small things, like turning off the lights, to the big things, like delivering outstanding customer service. An ESOP structure also tends to give companies a stronger footing when navigating economic uncertainty, which matters for every employer.
ESOP Benefits for Employees
Real retirement benefits are getting harder to find, and that is a genuine concern for most employees today. ESOPs build retirement value over time with no monetary investment required from the employee. Team members at ESOP companies also tend to feel they have a bigger voice in decision making, which drives deeper engagement across the board. When employees know their performance genuinely matters, both for the company and for themselves, it leads to real job satisfaction.
Employee owners are more likely to catch issues early, act in the company’s best interest, and bring solutions to the table instead of just problems. That sense of ownership builds trust across the organization and creates a much stronger sense of teamwork.
ESOP Benefits for Customers
Employee owners have a direct, personal stake in retaining customers and growing the business, which means better service, every time.
Lower turnover leads to longer customer relationships. Employees who stay longer bring more product knowledge and more experience to every conversation. When you work with someone at USA Mortgage, you are working with a mortgage professional who is genuinely invested, not just in your loan, but in your experience from start to finish.
